alpha spectroscopy
Alpha spectroscopy is a unique technique used for detecting and quantifying alpha-emitting radionuclides during the decaying process. Similar to Gamma Spectroscopy, energy spectra are generated with high precision detectors and electronics and analyzed with special software.
Complete alpha spectroscopy consists of alpha particle detector, vacuum chamber, recoil contamination avoidance package, electronics & analysis software.

alpha particle detector : si radiation detectors
Alpha Particle Detector with high resolution, low background, and the detection efficiency is used for the applications needed for alpha spectroscopy. Silicon radiation detectors are generally used for alpha spectroscopy. Depending on the applications, would then favour a different variation of Si detectors.
The most common applications of Alpha Spectroscopy are in radiochemistry and the screening of health physics and environmental samples. The silicon radiation detectors of choice for these applications are ULTRA radiation detectors with a depletion depth of ≥100 microns and ULTRA-AS radiation detectors for ultra-low background applications. Ion-implantation silicon-dioxide passivated technologies manufacture ULTRA series detectors. Versions bakeable at 200°C available on special order. |
vacuum chamber
The Vacuum Chamber is designed for routine alpha/beta counting applications using a semiconductor radiation detector and a radioactive sample.
Two examples of the many applications possible with this convenient and durable chamber are its use in educational laboratories to demonstrate detectors and counting principles, and in radiological laboratories for smear counting. The Vacuum Chamber is both functional and attractive, with its main housing made of stainless steel and mounted on a varnished wood base. An opening in the wooden base allows an effective-geometry gamma detector to be placed against the bottom of the thin stainless steel chamber for beta-gamma coincidence measurements. chamber for beta-gamma coincidence measurements. In this application, an extension cable is used to mount the semiconductor detector close to the chamber base. |
recoil contamination avoidance package
The Ion Recoil Contamination Avoidance Package (RCAP-2) is an accessory for ORTEC’s ALPHA-ARIA Alpha Spectrometer (and most older model alpha spectrometers). It is intended for alpha spectroscopists quantifying radionuclides which may contaminate charged-particle (ULTRA™ or surface barrier) detectors by ion recoil.
To avoid recoil contamination, one can reduce the momentum of the positively-charged recoils by increasing the vacuum chamber pressure and negatively biasing the sample holders, to repel the ions from the detector. The result is achieved at some minor cost in energy resolution |
electronics: alpha suite
With the Alpha Suite range of integrated Alpha Spectrometers, ORTEC is able to address the needs of ANY counting laboratory, large or small, upgrading or just starting out. The latest advanced digital design, together with a modular mechanical approach, aligns value and performance with unparalleled configuration flexibility. Any of these spectrometers may be added to existing ORTEC systems simply by installing the latest drivers included with the instrument.
